Oil Prices Dip, Easing Inflationary Pressures for Now
16 Jul
Summary
- West Texas Intermediate crude oil is trading around $80 per barrel.
- Consumer Price Index rose 3.5% year-over-year through June.
- Producer Price Index increased at a 5.5% annual rate through June.

Oil prices are decreasing, offering some relief from the inflationary pressures that have been mounting in the economy. The price for a barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude oil has settled around $80 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. This figure is down significantly from the $112 per barrel seen in April, amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
The impact of these lower oil prices is becoming evident in recent economic indicators. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), a key measure of inflation, registered a 3.5% year-over-year increase through June, a notable decrease from the 4.2% recorded in the prior month.
Further up the supply chain, the Producer Price Index (PPI) showed a similar trend. Through June, PPI climbed at a 5.5% annual rate, down from 6.5% in May. While these latest figures indicate a deceleration in price increases, experts caution that it is premature to conclude that inflation is on a sustained downward path.
