Watchdog Staff Net £537k Bonuses Amid Pollution Crisis
7 Nov
Summary
- Ofwat staff received over £537,000 in bonuses in five years.
- Paiyouts continued as pollution levels and consumer bills rose.
- Ofwat faces abolition due to failure to police water companies.

Hundreds of staff at the water industry watchdog Ofwat have received substantial bonuses and vouchers totaling over £537,000 in the last five years. These payouts persisted in the year to July 2026, with 281 employees sharing £108,050 in bonuses and reward vouchers.
This occurred despite soaring pollution levels in rivers and significant increases in consumer water bills. Households are braced for average rises of 36% by 2030, with some facing an extra £43 annually. Senior directors at Ofwat received bonuses of up to £15,000 on top of their salaries.
The revelation follows plans for water firms to spend an extra £3.4 billion on infrastructure, with costs passed to consumers. The interim chief executive received up to £5,000 in bonuses in 2024-25. Ofwat is set to be folded into a more powerful regulator within the Environment Agency as part of the government's Clean Water Bill.
Critics argue taxpayers are stunned by these payouts to staff at a regulator being scrapped for failure. An Ofwat spokesperson stated that rewards are given for work that adds value and supports better outcomes for customers and the environment, highlighting significant fines levied against water companies for sewage failures.
