NY Power Line Outage Sparks Governor's Ire
17 Jul
Summary
- Champlain Hudson Power Express line suffers extended outage.
- Governor Hochul's administration calls the downtime 'unacceptable'.
- Outage strains New York City's grid during peak demand.

New York's crucial Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line is currently offline, a situation described as 'unacceptable' by Governor Kathy Hochul's administration. The $6 billion project, designed to deliver 1,250 megawatts of clean energy, is facing an extended outage expected to last through the end of July. This is due to a cable issue on the U.S. side of the line, unrelated to a previous shutdown on July 1.
The prolonged downtime puts significant pressure on New York City's electrical grid, which has razor-thin reserves. With the line down, the city has had to increase its reliance on fossil fuel generators, including oil-fired plants, to meet rising energy demand during recent heatwaves. This exacerbates downstate pollution.
The 339-mile power line, a joint venture between Hydro-Quebec and Blackstone Inc., stretches from the Canadian border to Astoria, Queens. Grid operator New York ISO stated it was not relying on the CHPE line this summer, despite the 'extremely tight' grid reserves.
