Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has cast significant doubt on the $100 billion investment deal with OpenAI, suggesting it is unlikely to proceed. This massive investment, announced in September, was planned to support the development of 10 gigawatts of AI data centers for OpenAI, with Nvidia committed to 10 installments. In return, OpenAI was expected to reinvest in Nvidia's chips.
The proposed deal faced industry-wide discussion regarding the risks of circular dealmaking and potential AI bubble concerns. Reports in November and January from the Wall Street Journal indicated that talks had stalled, citing a lack of discipline in OpenAI's business approach and concerns over its competitiveness against rivals like Google and Anthropic. Further reports suggested OpenAI was dissatisfied with Nvidia's chip inference capabilities and hardware performance.
Despite initial denials and assurances of progress from both companies, subsequent reports from The Financial Times indicated the deal's abandonment. Nvidia's latest earnings report also omitted assurances of the transaction's completion, though Huang stated they are working towards a partnership agreement, believing they are 'close.' OpenAI's anticipated public offering later this year is now seen as a primary reason for the investment's uncertainty.
