26 Feb
Summary
- NV Energy owes $63 million to 43,000 customers.
- Multifamily homes were wrongly billed at higher rates.
- Refunds will arrive as credits or checks in 4-7 months.

NV Energy will refund an estimated $63 million to approximately 43,000 customers across Nevada. The utility company misclassified multifamily housing units, such as apartments and condos, incorrectly billing them at higher single-family rates. This error affected about 10% of multifamily customers statewide, leading to prolonged billing inaccuracies confirmed by state regulators.
The settlement, overseen by the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, aims to rectify the overcharges. Individual refund amounts will vary based on the duration of misclassification and energy consumption. Customers can expect to receive their refunds, either as bill credits for current users or mailed checks for former customers, within 120 to 210 days of the settlement's approval.
No customer application is necessary to receive the refund. NV Energy is managing the distribution process, which involves verifying billing records. Consumer advocates have noted the importance of improved monitoring systems to prevent future billing errors, while NV Energy's leadership has acknowledged the company's responsibility in rectifying the mistake and rebuilding customer trust.
