Summary
- NSE introduced Electronic Gold Receipts for transparent gold trading.
- EGRs represent ownership of securely stored physical gold.
- This innovation bridges physical gold with financial markets.

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has introduced Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs), creating a new segment for gold trading. This innovation is designed to establish a more transparent and efficient system for discovering the price of gold.
EGRs are dematerialized securities that signify ownership of physical gold. This gold is held securely in Sebi-accredited vaults and managed electronically through depositories. Each EGR is fully backed by physical gold, making it a tradable instrument on the exchange.
The NSE's launch aims to build a robust ecosystem for gold trading. It is expected to enhance price discovery, increase market participation, and foster greater trust among stakeholders like jewelers, refiners, traders, and institutional investors.
Shri Sriram Krishnan, CBDO of NSE, highlighted that EGRs represent a significant evolution in how India engages with gold. The system facilitates electronic holding and seamless conversion between physical and digital forms, enabling broader investor participation.
