NPS Access Set to Expand with New PFRDA Rules
3 Sep
Summary
- PFRDA proposes framework changes to broaden NPS accessibility.
- New rules aim to enhance digital onboarding and PoP accountability.
- Stakeholder feedback is invited until October 2, 2026.

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has introduced proposed amendments to its Point of Presence (PoP) regulations, aiming to significantly broaden access to the National Pension System (NPS). These changes are designed to encourage a wider range of entities to become PoPs, especially in underserved areas, while also facilitating a dedicated digital pathway for subscriber services.
Subscribers can expect increased accessibility to NPS accounts through more diverse entities and locations. A new digital onboarding process will streamline account opening, contributions, and service requests via PFRDA-authorized platforms. This move is anticipated to attract digital-first companies into the NPS distribution network.
Furthermore, PoPs utilizing NPS Mitras for subscriber services will maintain full responsibility for their actions. This includes ensuring compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) and anti-money-laundering norms. In cases of established fraud or negligence by a PoP or NPS Mitra leading to subscriber loss, the PoP will be obligated to compensate the subscriber.
PFRDA is actively seeking feedback on these proposals, with a deadline of October 2, 2026, for stakeholder comments. The proposed framework seeks to balance expanded access with robust subscriber protection and clear PoP accountability.
