West Northamptonshire Council has approved a £1m settlement for an overspend on the Market Square renovation project, increasing the total expenditure to £13.5m. The original budget was £12.5m, with funding partly from the government's Future High Streets Fund.
The substantial cost increase was attributed to unexpected challenges during the 18 months of work, including significant archaeological discoveries, collapsed Victorian sewers, and the need to divert underground utilities. Contractor Stepnell Ltd had initially claimed an additional £2.3m for loss and expenses, with the negotiated settlement representing the best achievable final account.
The newly redeveloped Market Square, featuring improved paving, lighting, and water features, officially opened in October 2024. Since its reopening, it has hosted numerous events, including Northamptonshire Day and Women's Rugby World Cup fan zones. The additional £1m will be drawn from the council's general fund.
