As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact households across the UK, the King's Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council is taking proactive steps to support local residents. In the lead-up to the winter months, the council is running a series of "Beat the Bills Roadshow" events throughout the district, including in Hunstanton, Downham Market, and Dersingham.
The aim of these roadshows is to help people like pensioner Hillary Letch get ahead of potential money worries before they become severe enough to risk losing their homes or turning to illegal lenders. Letch, a Hunstanton resident, expressed her concerns about how she would manage her bills this winter after the death of her husband, leaving her with a significantly reduced income.
To assist residents, the council's Lily Project is connecting people to advice on managing debt, accessing benefits, and making their homes more energy-efficient. Measures such as energy-efficient light bulbs, reflective radiator panels, and low-flow shower heads are being distributed to attendees.
Richard Carter, another Hunstanton resident, attended the roadshow seeking guidance on reducing his energy bills, which have been impacted by rising standing charges in recent years. The council's message is clear: reach out for help before resorting to drastic measures, as they are committed to supporting the community through this challenging period.
