Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Noida International Airport, a project that has been in discussion for nearly 25 years. The new airport, located in Jewar, Noida, commences operations with an initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually. This is a crucial addition for the National Capital Region's air travel infrastructure.
Upon completion of its four phases, the airport is projected to manage 70 million flyers each year, equipped with six runways. Zurich Airport International AG is developing and operating the facility for 40 years, investing approximately ₹7,200 crore in the initial phase. While positioned as a secondary airport to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, its proximity benefits western Uttar Pradesh more directly.
The airport's development faced delays, including those due to the pandemic affecting construction material supplies and regulatory approvals. Flights are anticipated to begin within approximately one month, pending final security program clearance. Initially, the airport will manage around 20 daily departures and arrivals, with plans for gradual capacity expansion. The Uttar Pradesh government is also planning a ₹16,000 crore rapid rail corridor to connect Noida International Airport with Delhi and other areas.
