NJ Transit Portal Bridge Work On Schedule
20 Feb
Summary
- Portal North Bridge construction is on schedule and progressing well.
- Crews are working 24/7 in 12-hour shifts to complete the final stage.
- Full service is expected to be restored by the evening of March 15.

Commuters on NJ Transit and Amtrak can anticipate the end of service disruptions related to the new Portal North Bridge construction. The extensive work, described as a major infrastructure activation on the Northeast Corridor, is currently on schedule.
Approximately 150 personnel are engaged in a meticulously planned, around-the-clock operation. This four-week 'cutover' process, crucial for transitioning to the new bridge, is progressing as intended despite potential weather challenges.
The old Portal Bridge, operational for 116 years, currently facilitates around 450 train crossings daily. The ongoing construction requires temporary service reductions as crews integrate the new track and bridge infrastructure.
The transition involves detailed adjustments to overhead wires and signal systems. Critical testing phases, including system validation from Newark Penn and New York Penn Station, are scheduled for the third week.
Upon full completion, trains will operate at up to 90 miles per hour, a significant increase from the restricted 60 mph on the old bridge. This upgrade promises a smoother and more efficient journey for passengers.
Service disruptions are slated to conclude on the evening of March 15, with full service restored. The second track switchover is planned for the fall.
