26 May
Summary
- Niva Bupa aims for top two market share in three years.
- Company plans to grow 5-6% faster than the market.
- Young Indians prioritize health insurance but lack policies.

Niva Bupa Health Insurance is strategically positioning itself to become one of the top two players in India's retail health insurance market within the next three years. The insurer aims to outpace market growth by an estimated 5-6 percent, focusing on expanding its digital direct-to-consumer channels and increasing penetration in tier 2 to tier 4 cities through agency and bancassurance partnerships.
Currently holding the third position among standalone health insurance (SAHI) companies in the retail space with a 10.1 percent market share last fiscal, Niva Bupa is in close competition with Care Health Insurance, while Star Health and Allied Insurance leads. The company reported a 27 percent overall gross written premium growth in the last financial year, with its retail health segment experiencing a substantial 35 percent increase. The average ticket size in the retail segment has also seen a year-on-year growth of over 10 percent, driven by higher sum-assured policies and price adjustments.
A recent consumer insights report by Niva Bupa reveals significant findings regarding young Indians' attitudes towards health insurance. Despite 51 percent of young individuals listing health insurance among their top three financial priorities, only 14 percent currently own a policy. This indicates a substantial gap, with nearly 76 percent of young Indians remaining financially or medically exposed to unforeseen health events, and only 24 percent feeling adequately prepared for medical emergencies.
