Nissan EV Plan Ditched Amidst European Demand Slump
24 May
Summary
- JATCO cancelled its EV powertrain production plan in Sunderland.
- The decision stems from sluggish demand for Nissan EVs in Europe.
- The investment was for up to 340,000 EV powertrains annually.

JATCO, a subsidiary of Nissan Motor, has abandoned its planned investment in electric vehicle (EV) powertrain production at its Sunderland, Britain facility. The decision, reported on Sunday, is attributed to weaker-than-anticipated demand for Nissan's EVs across Europe.
Initially, JATCO had announced a significant investment of 48.7 million pounds to establish a production line capable of manufacturing up to 340,000 EV powertrains per year. These integrated units combine the motor, inverter, and reducer. However, Nissan's subsequent review of its global production facilities, prompted by weakening sales in the U.S. and China, led to this strategic shift.
Nissan is currently streamlining its global manufacturing footprint, reducing the number of its auto production plants. No immediate comment was available from Nissan outside of business hours, and JATCO has yet to respond to inquiries.
