Nippon Life Embraces Eco-Ratings for Power Buys

Nippon Life Insurance is set to become a trailblazer among major Japanese corporations by adopting an environmental rating system for its electricity procurement. This initiative will guide the insurer's transition to renewable energy sources, a goal it aims to achieve by 2030. The system, developed by the Nature Conservation Society of Japan, evaluates approximately 510 wind energy providers.

This sophisticated rating tool identifies energy project operators facing significant local opposition due to environmental concerns. Nippon Life plans to exclusively source electricity from top-ranking companies, ensuring that new projects do not negatively impact conservation areas or endangered species. The insurer also considers community engagement and the mitigation of potential environmental damage, such as forest clearing.
