NZ Home Prices Dip Amidst Summer Doldrums
16 Feb
Summary
- New Zealand home prices fell slightly in January.
- Seasonal factors and severe weather impacted demand.
- Annual price gains remain modest, indicating slow confidence rebuilding.

In January, New Zealand's housing market saw a modest decline in median home prices, as seasonal holiday patterns typically temper demand. Severe weather events affecting parts of the North Island further contributed to the slowdown in market activity.
Seasonally adjusted data revealed a 1.2% decrease in median prices compared to December. However, on an annual basis, prices showed a slight increase of 0.4% from January of the previous year. National home sales also experienced a downturn, falling by 8.9% from December and 0.6% compared to January 2025.
Industry analysts noted that interpreting market movements during the summer months (November to February) requires careful consideration of seasonal fluctuations. Once these trends are factored out, the market appears broadly stable, suggesting that buyer confidence is being rebuilt gradually.
