New SUVs Race to Dethrone Toyota Fortuner
7 Mar
Summary
- Premium SUV segment sees new challengers emerge.
- Hybrid powertrains are a key feature in upcoming models.
- Toyota holds an 86% market share in this segment.

India's premium utility vehicle segment is anticipating intense competition as manufacturers prepare to launch new models challenging the Toyota Fortuner's dominance. This segment, characterized by vehicles priced above Rs 30 lakh, represents less than 2% of total utility vehicle sales but yields substantial brand prestige and profit margins.
Several upcoming SUVs are expected to incorporate hybrid powertrains, aligning with Toyota's established strategy in India. JSW MG Motor recently unveiled the Majestor, a seven-seater SUV slated to compete directly with the Fortuner, with pricing to be announced in April 2026.
Further contenders include JSW Motors' planned hybrid SUV based on the Chery Automobile Jetour T2. Hyundai is also preparing multiple entries, with luxury brand Genesis's GV80 SUV slated for a 2027 launch, followed by a premium MPV in 2028 and potentially the Staria MPV and Palisade SUV around 2028-2029.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India plans to introduce the sportier Kodiaq RS, possibly with a hybrid variant. Volkswagen has also launched the Tayron L in this segment. This D-segment growth is fueled by rising incomes and consumer aspirations for larger, premium vehicles.
As of the first 10 months of fiscal 2026, sales in the premium UV segment (UV5) rose by 5% to 37,782 units. Toyota leads this segment with an 86% share, selling models like the Fortuner and Hilux. The broader UV market grew 8% during the same period.
