An eco-friendly rail maintenance building has officially opened in Barnetby, North Lincolnshire. This new facility represents an £8.8 million investment in the county's rail infrastructure.
The two-storey, timber-frame building replaces older facilities and brings together maintenance teams from Grimsby, Barnetby, and Scunthorpe. It is designed to support Network Rail's ambition to achieve net zero by 2050 and serves as a model for future maintenance hubs.
The site, operational since June 1, accommodates over 100 maintenance staff. It features air-source heat pumps, triple-glazed windows, and rooftop solar panels to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Additionally, acoustic fencing has been installed to minimize local noise pollution, and the grounds have been enhanced with trees, plants, and bat boxes.
