12 Sep
Summary
- Average new vehicle price exceeded $50,000 in August for the first time.
- Automakers reduced incentives, decreasing average discounts for buyers.
- Experts suggest delaying purchases until December for potential savings.

New vehicle transaction prices in the U.S. climbed to over $50,000 in August, marking the first time this threshold has been crossed this year. The average price stood at $50,089, a 1.9% increase from the previous year. This rise is exacerbated by a reduction in manufacturer incentives, with average discounts falling to 6.5% of the transaction price from 7.2% a year ago.
Experts note that price inflation for new cars is significant, with average marketed prices also reaching record highs. Despite this, the automotive industry's price increases have been moderate in recent years. Shoppers facing financial pressures are increasingly looking for more affordable options, boosting demand for subcompact SUVs, which have the lowest average transaction prices.
Analysts suggest that automakers may be withholding incentives until later in the year, possibly for a year-end sales push in November and December. To navigate the current high prices, buying a retired service loaner car, now certified pre-owned, is recommended for savings of $6,000 to $8,000. Demand for affordable used vehicles is also increasing, with lower-priced used cars selling faster than expensive inventory.
