Nepal Cuts Work Week Amid Fuel Crisis
5 Apr
Summary
- Government offices will now have a two-day weekend, closing on Saturdays and Sundays.
- New office hours are 9 AM to 5 PM, extending the workday by one hour.
- These changes aim to address disruptions in petroleum product supply.

Effective Monday, Nepal's government offices will observe a two-day weekend, closing on both Saturdays and Sundays. This marks a significant shift from the previous schedule, which only included Saturdays off.
In addition to the extended weekend, working hours for government offices have been revised to 9 AM to 5 PM, adding an hour to the daily operational period. These adjustments are a direct response to an 'uncomfortable situation' caused by disruptions in the petroleum supply chain.
While government offices and educational institutions will be closed on weekends, the new 9 AM to 5 PM working hours specifically apply to government offices, excluding educational institutions. This decision follows a recent increase in aviation fuel prices by up to 117.4% for international flights to help meet payment obligations and prevent further supply issues.
