NC DMV Wait Times Plummet: Hours Slashed to Minutes
20 Mar
Summary
- North Carolina DMV average wait times have significantly decreased.
- New hires and policy shifts led to reduced delays.
- DMV now offers live online wait times to aid customer planning.

Average wait times at North Carolina DMV offices have seen a dramatic reduction in recent months. This improvement follows an I-Team investigation that highlighted excessive wait times, with some Triangle-area offices previously averaging over three hours per visit. Operational changes, new hires, and policy shifts have contributed to shorter queues across the state.
The North Carolina DMV recently began publishing live wait times online for every office, a tool intended to help customers plan their visits more effectively. Officials attribute the reduced delays significantly to increased staffing, with funding secured to hire additional employees statewide.
Policy changes have also moved some transactions online, and commercial driving schools can now conduct road tests for adults, previously a DMV-exclusive responsibility. This should help streamline the process. Despite these successes, DMV officials acknowledge that further reductions are needed to reach an average of 15 minutes, with additional funding sought to restore extended service hours, especially during peak summer months.
