Namo Bharat Expands: Faster NCR Travel Ahead
15 Sep
Summary
- Two new Namo Bharat corridors will significantly cut regional travel times.
- Corridors aim to boost economic growth and reduce pressure on Delhi.
- Preparatory work has begun, awaiting cabinet approval for projects.

India's successful semi-high-speed regional rail network is expanding with plans for two new Namo Bharat corridors. The Delhi-Panipat-Karnal corridor is projected to halve travel time to 90 minutes, while the Delhi-Gurugram-Bawal corridor aims to reduce it to approximately 67 minutes from the current 180 minutes. These initiatives are in their final approval phases, with essential preparatory work like geotechnical investigations already commencing. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is spearheading these developments.
The envisioned corridors are expected to foster balanced economic growth across the NCR, easing pressure on Delhi and creating new opportunities in developing urban centers. They will also facilitate Transit-Oriented Development, encouraging mixed-use areas around stations. These projects will generate considerable employment during construction and operational phases. The Delhi-Karnal route will link key industrial and educational hubs, while the Delhi-Bawal corridor will connect to Delhi Airport and a significant industrial belt.
Commuters can anticipate drastically reduced travel times, improved connectivity between cities and towns, and a significant reduction in road traffic congestion. This expansion represents a pivotal shift in NCR's mobility, offering a reliable and efficient alternative to long road journeys. The first Namo Bharat corridor, Delhi-Meerut, already connects 16 stations over 82 km at a cost of Rs 30,274 crore, demonstrating the potential of this network.
