Mutual Funds Flatline Amid Market Turmoil
26 Apr
Summary
- Most fund houses saw low single-digit growth due to market downturn.
- SBI MF and HDFC MF assets remained largely unchanged in Q1.
- Strong retail and SIP inflows cushioned AUM decline.
- AUM was flat at Rs 81.53 lakh crore in March quarter.

The mutual fund industry in India experienced significant challenges during the March quarter, with a majority of asset management companies reporting only low single-digit growth. This sluggish performance is directly linked to the volatile equity markets and a substantial decline in key benchmark indices, which fell by approximately 15% during the quarter.
Market leaders like SBI MF and HDFC MF saw their assets under management (AUM) remain largely flat or show marginal increases. This was attributed to mark-to-market losses in both active and passive funds, exacerbated by year-end redemptions. The ongoing conflict in West Asia also disrupted economic growth, further impacting market performance.
Despite the overall downturn, the mutual fund industry benefited from consistent inflows from retail investors. Steady contributions through Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) and equity inflows played a crucial role in preventing a sharper decline in AUM. This sustained investor participation, for the 61st consecutive month, indicates a growing trend of domestic investors acting counter-cyclically.
Investor confidence remained robust, with inflows into actively managed equity schemes increasing by 9% and passive fund inflows jumping by 44% in the March quarter compared to the previous one. Experts suggest that rising SIP penetration and investor awareness will continue to support inflows in the long run, even amidst market volatility.
