Summary
- Muthoot Finance's assets under management surged 43% to ₹1.08 trillion in FY25.

- New RBI guidelines on loan-to-value ratios take effect from April 2026.

Muthoot Finance, India's largest gold loan NBFC, has demonstrated exceptional performance, with its standalone assets under management (AUM) jumping 43% to ₹1.08 trillion in FY25. This marks a significant acceleration, effectively doubling its gold loan portfolio in under three years and surpassing its own conservative growth guidance.
The broader Indian gold loan industry also experienced a landmark year in FY25, becoming the fastest-growing credit segment. This expansion is fueled by households holding substantial gold reserves, estimated between ₹10 lakh crore and ₹20 lakh crore, with increasing awareness of monetizing these assets as gold prices rise.
However, the sector faced challenges. A 50% surge in domestic gold prices during FY25, while beneficial for collateral values, introduced margin pressure risks. Furthermore, new draft guidelines from the RBI, implemented from April 2026, revised the loan-to-value ratio and necessitated recalibrated underwriting and operational practices.
Increased competition from scheduled commercial banks and new fintech players has sharpened the market landscape. Muthoot Finance's response has been a characteristic focus on discipline and letting its consistent performance speak for itself, as it continued to exceed growth targets in FY26 with AUM rising another 50%.
