Musk's Terafab: Aggressive Chip Production Timeline
21 Oct
Summary
- Terafab aims for volume chip production by Q3 2028.
- Aims to produce 1 terawatt of computing power annually.
- Aims for a functional test chip by May/June 2027.

Elon Musk has announced that Terafab, the chip manufacturing joint venture between SpaceX and Tesla, is targeting volume production by the third quarter of 2028. Musk cautioned that this timeline is very aggressive and carries significant error bars, acknowledging the challenges in chip manufacturing.
The ambitious project aims to produce 1 terawatt of computing power annually, intended for AI and robotics applications. Musk envisions a Texas complex integrating advanced manufacturing, packaging, and testing for both logic and memory chips. Internally, Terafab aims to have a functional test chip utilizing static random-access memory (SRAM) circuits by May or June of 2027 at its Austin research facility.
Acquiring necessary equipment, such as ASML's extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, presents a major hurdle. Intel has joined the Terafab project to accelerate its goals, and discussions regarding potential cooperation with TSMC have occurred, though Terafab remains committed to operating the facility itself.
