Musk Defends AI Rivalry: 'Not My Style' to Sabotage

Anthropic has entered into a substantial compute deal with Elon Musk's xAI, a merged entity of xAI and SpaceX. As of July 2026, Anthropic is a major customer, having agreed to rent the entire output of xAI's Colossus 1 data center near Memphis, Tennessee. This agreement, valued at $1.25 billion monthly until May 2029, represents a significant $40 billion revenue stream for SpaceX's AI division. This deal significantly contrasts with Musk's earlier doubts about Anthropic's success.

Musk has publicly expressed admiration for Anthropic, calling them the current AI leader and praising their models like Mythos/Fable. He vehemently denied any intention to sabotage a competitor, stating, "That's not my style." He pointed to Tesla's 2014 decision against patent lawsuits and SpaceX's fair terms for competing satellite systems as examples of his business philosophy. Anthropic's reliance on SpaceX's infrastructure, however, could offer SpaceX enhanced insights into Anthropic's operations, despite contractual safeguards against abrupt shutdowns.
