Mumbai Rail Goes Underground to Ease Land Woes
16 Jul
Summary
- Mumbai may get its first underground suburban station at Byculla.
- An underground corridor between Parel and CSMT is being studied.
- Land acquisition challenges are driving the underground consideration.

Mumbai is exploring the possibility of constructing its first underground suburban railway station at Byculla. This initiative is part of a significant expansion project for the Central Railway's suburban network.
The plan involves an underground corridor between Parel and CSMT, aimed at segregating suburban and long-distance train services. This approach is primarily being considered to bypass the difficulties and high costs associated with acquiring land in densely populated areas.
A feasibility study is currently underway, led by Japanese consultancy firm PADECO. They will assess engineering aspects, geological conditions, and the proposed tunnel's alignment. The study will also investigate the viability of an underground station at Byculla, while the existing station would continue serving slow corridor services.
Railway officials believe suburban trains are well-suited for underground operations due to their ability to handle steeper gradients. The proposed tunnel could be built 20 to 25 meters below the current tracks, avoiding expensive land acquisition. This concept gained traction after the successful construction of Mumbai's underground Metro Line 3, demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale tunneling in congested urban environments.
