BMC Cracks Down: Pay Water Dues or Lose Supply!
31 Mar
Summary
- BMC warns of water disconnection for overdue bills by March 31.
- Slums face stricter enforcement, with only 50% currently paying bills.
- Faulty water meters require repair within six months to avoid double charges.

As summer approaches and unpaid water bills rise, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued public notices across its wards. Defaulters have been warned to clear their dues by March 31, or face disconnection of water supply. This initiative aims to ensure consistent water availability and boost bill recovery, especially in areas with a history of non-payment.
Officials highlighted that in certain areas, particularly slums, water bill payment rates are as low as 50%. The BMC is also reinforcing water meter regulations, directing residents to ensure their meters are in working order. Failure to repair or replace faulty meters within a six-month period will lead to bills calculated with double consumption charges.
These updated rules, in effect since July 1, 2025, also address situations where meters are unreadable or have been tampered with, such as being deliberately removed or buried for over six months. In such cases, double charges will be imposed. However, a 25 percent charge will apply to faulty meters requiring repairs, and no additional charges will be levied during the repair or replacement period.
Civic activists have welcomed the BMC's focus on meter checks and timely bill payments, recognizing the two-way relationship between consumers and the government, especially in light of recurring summer water shortages and reliance on water tankers.
