Mumbai Slums: 450 Acres Set for Mega Redevelopment
23 Jun
Summary
- Wadala's Antop Hill, a 450-acre slum cluster, is slated for redevelopment.
- Juhu Galli's pilot project saw a 35.1% premium bid, exceeding expectations.
- Mumbai aims for a slum-free city with Housing Policy 2025 initiatives.

Mumbai is accelerating its slum redevelopment efforts with plans for three mega clusters. The largest, Antop Hill in Wadala, spans 450 acres and is now targeted for redevelopment by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). This initiative follows the successful pilot project at Juhu Galli in Andheri West, a 101.4-acre area that is expected to yield over 28,000 homes.
Two other significant slum areas, Majaswadi (260 acres) in Jogeshwari East and Behrampada (140 acres) in Bandra East, have also been designated for redevelopment. The SRA is seeking approval from the state's high-powered committee for these projects. The Juhu Galli project, which concluded with a Reliance-led consortium bidding a 35.1% premium, has encouraged the SRA to identify 18 additional large slum pockets for similar schemes.
These ambitious redevelopment plans are driven by the state government's vision to make Mumbai a slum-free city, as outlined in Housing Policy 2025. The policy aims to accelerate the transformation of slum areas through a planned and integrated approach, ensuring safe and permanent homes for citizens. The encouraging response to the Juhu Galli project indicates growing private sector interest in slum rehabilitation.
