24 May
Summary
- Second tunnel boring machine's cutterhead lowered in Navi Mumbai.
- Two TBMs will excavate a 16-km section, including an undersea tunnel.
- Excavation work for the bullet train project is set to begin in July.

In Navi Mumbai, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has completed a significant step for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. The 13.6-meter diameter cutterhead for the second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was lowered this past Saturday. This marks the final assembly stage for this TBM's main shield.
The second TBM is scheduled to begin tunnelling from Sawli towards Vikhroli in Mumbai. The cutterhead for the first TBM was previously lowered in Vikhroli last week. Both machines are now preparing for final assembly and commissioning trials. Excavation work is slated to begin in the first week of July.
These advanced TBMs are designed to construct a single tunnel accommodating both up and down lines for the high-speed corridor. The machines will excavate a 16-km stretch of the 21-km Mumbai tunnel, which notably includes a 7-km undersea section under Thane Creek. This undersea tunnel will be a first for India's railway infrastructure.
