Mumbai's AC Local Trains Arrive by 2027
21 Aug
Summary
- 238 AC local rakes to be manufactured in India.
- First AC EMUs scheduled for Mumbai in 2027.
- Production to be completed by 2030.

Indian Railways is set to manufacture 238 air-conditioned Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rakes, with production sites designated at Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Raebareli, and Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala. This strategic move prioritizes the timely availability of rolling stock to complement infrastructure upgrades under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).
ICF Chennai will lead production with 120 rakes, followed by RCF Kapurthala with 71, and MCF Raebareli with 47. The first of these modern AC EMU trainsets are slated for delivery to Mumbai in 2027. The complete order of 238 rakes is scheduled for completion by 2030.
This phased rollout, beginning in 2027 and concluding by 2030, is designed to synchronize the induction of new rolling stock with the commissioning of new infrastructure. The government emphasizes that this will ensure optimal utilization of the infrastructure being developed, bridging any potential gaps between infrastructure readiness and service commencement.
