Moutai's Market Reign Ends Amidst Economic Shift
19 Aug
Summary
- Moutai's net profit saw a rare 1.95% drop in the first half of 2026.
- Economic shifts away from real estate impact traditional baijiu consumption.
- Chinese tech stocks are increasingly surpassing Moutai in market value.

Kweichow Moutai, a prominent Chinese liquor brand, has reported a rare drop in net profit for the first six months of 2026, with a 1.95% decrease to 44.5 billion yuan. This marks the first semi-annual profit decline since 2014, signaling significant shifts within China's economy. The company was previously the largest listed entity in mainland China by market capitalization from 2020 to 2023.
Analysts attribute Moutai's struggles to China's economic pivot from real estate towards high-tech sectors. Fund manager Ye Yuhua noted that individuals in emerging tech industries are less inclined to consume baijiu, deeming it a saturated market. This trend, coupled with intensified anti-corruption measures and tightened real estate developer restrictions, has impacted sales.
Institutional investor sentiment has also shown signs of wavering, with major state funds like Central Huijin and China Securities Finance no longer appearing among Moutai's top shareholders. Despite this, some analysts, like Dongfang Li, believe Moutai's high profit margins and stable dividends may still attract institutional funds.
Looking ahead, Moutai has implemented two rounds of price hikes this year. Analysts anticipate that the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival and these price adjustments could support earnings growth in the latter half of 2026. Projections suggest an 8% compound annual growth rate for net profit from 2025 to 2030. However, the rise of Chinese tech companies, such as CXMT which is reportedly 2.5 times Moutai's market capitalization, indicates a broader market shift towards technological innovation.
