Mortgage Rates Static: Homebuyers Hesitate
19 Aug
Summary
- 30-year fixed mortgage rate unchanged at 6.77% last week.
- Overall mortgage application volume fell slightly by 0.4%.
- Affordability concerns are making buyers delay home purchases.

As of last week, the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage remained unchanged at 6.77%. This stability in rates provided minimal motivation for prospective homebuyers and existing homeowners to engage with lenders or consider moving.
Total mortgage application volume experienced a slight decrease of 0.4% from the prior week. While conventional and VA loan refinances saw a marginal increase, FHA loan refinance applications declined.
Borrowers seeking to refinance larger loans are less inclined to proceed with higher mortgage rates. The average size of refinance loans has consequently fallen to $282,200, the lowest since June 2025.
Rising monthly mortgage payments present a growing challenge for buyers. Concerns about affordability have re-emerged as a key reason for delaying home purchases. Combined with economic uncertainty and elevated mortgage rates, these factors are complicating the decision-making process for many prospective buyers.
