MOL Powers Up with New Solar and Battery Hub

Hungarian energy firm MOL Group has officially opened a new solar park and battery storage system at its Algyő location, significantly advancing its renewable energy initiatives in Central Europe. The facility integrates a 37.4-MWp solar park with a 20-MW/40-MWh battery energy storage system.

This new infrastructure will enable MOL to store excess renewable electricity, thereby managing power generation fluctuations. Combined with existing assets, the Algyő site's power demand will be fully met by the new solar installation.

MOL anticipates this project will slash carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 13,000 tonnes each year. It also aims to decrease the company's dependence on external electricity purchases.

The solar park is projected to generate enough electricity to power around 22,500 households annually. György Bacsa, MOL Group Chief Strategic Officer, stated that homegrown green electricity lessens reliance on external sources, while the battery storage bolsters the national grid's stability.

The construction was handled by ALTEO Plc., a Hungarian energy company in which MOL and its partners hold a majority stake. MOL now operates nine solar parks in Hungary, totaling 405 MW, and two battery storage facilities with a combined capacity of 80 MWh.

MOL plans a substantial expansion of its Hungarian battery storage capacity, aiming for 500 MWh by 2030. Across Central Europe, MOL's photovoltaic portfolio now totals 415 MWp, reducing annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 160,000 tonnes.
