Mississippi Liquor Chaos: Warehouse Woes Halt Deliveries
18 Apr
Summary
- New warehouse system caused delivery delays of approximately three weeks.
- Retail orders increased by over 30 percent, complicating backlog reduction.
- Some businesses are buying directly from stores, facing higher prices.

Businesses throughout Mississippi are experiencing significant liquor shortages, with deliveries from the state's distribution warehouse experiencing delays of approximately three weeks. These issues began in January after the state Alcoholic Beverage Control replaced its aging conveyor belt system with new technology and management software.
Technical problems encountered after the system's restart, compounded by an ice storm in late January, exacerbated the delivery problems. Although the agency states technical issues are now fixed and operations are at full capacity, a recent over 30 percent increase in retail orders has created a substantial backlog. As of the reporting date, 172,176 cases were awaiting delivery, with an average wait time of just over 17 days.
Restaurant and bar owners are struggling with the unpredictable supply, with some resorting to buying from local liquor stores at inflated prices. This situation has led to calls for the privatization of the state-run liquor distribution system. The Mississippi Alcoholic Beverage Control expects shipments to normalize within the coming weeks and is constructing a larger, state-of-the-art warehouse by year's end.
