India's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities have reached a new milestone with the inauguration of Micron Technology's advanced ATMP facility in Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the state-of-the-art plant, which began as a Memorandum of Understanding signed nearly three years ago. The facility is dedicated to the assembly, testing, marking, and packaging of semiconductor products.
This significant investment of Rs 22,516 crore by the US-based Micron Technology is set to boost the Indian economy and create substantial employment. Initially, 2,000 individuals are working at the plant, with plans to expand direct employment to 5,000 people. The facility also emphasizes inclusivity, providing opportunities for skilled individuals from all societal backgrounds, including specially-abled citizens.
The Sanand plant will transform semiconductor wafers from Micron's global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage devices, including SSDs, DRAM, and NAND products. These components are crucial for a wide range of technologies, from smartphones and servers to data centers and consumer electronics. Once fully operational, the facility will boast approximately 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, positioning it among the world's largest.
