Summary
- Hundreds of Meta employees laid off across multiple departments.
- Job cuts impact recruiting, sales, and Reality Labs divisions.
- Company continues AI data center buildout and invests in new tech.

Meta has implemented significant job cuts, laying off hundreds of employees across several key divisions. The affected teams include those in recruiting, social media, and sales, as well as Reality Labs, which is responsible for developing smart glasses and virtual reality hardware.
A Meta spokesperson stated that teams regularly restructure to optimize for goals and that efforts are made to find alternative roles for impacted employees. Specific numbers for the current layoffs were not disclosed, but Meta had nearly 79,000 employees as of December 2025.
This round of layoffs occurs as Meta increasingly prioritizes its Artificial Intelligence initiatives, including a substantial investment in AI data centers. The company is also reportedly acquiring a deal to utilize Arm's first CPU in these facilities.
These recent cuts follow a series of reductions within the Reality Labs division earlier in the year. In January, at least 1,000 workers were laid off from this sector, several VR studios were closed, and certain metaverse projects were halted.
