MercadoLibre Eyes Chilean Pharmacy Operations

MercadoLibre, a major Latin American e-commerce firm, has engaged in discussions with Chilean authorities about establishing pharmacy operations within the country. This ambitious plan, revealed through meeting records, would require significant changes or reinterpretations of existing local regulations. The company has reportedly met with Chilean officials at least six times over the past year.

The proposal involves an online-only pharmacy model. Chile's Public Health Institute (ISP) has indicated that MercadoLibre currently lacks authorization to operate an in-house drugstore, and online-only pharmacies are not permitted under current laws. This strategic expansion into healthcare services is part of MercadoLibre's broader initiative to deepen its retail operations across Latin America.

This venture into pharmacy operations in Chile closely follows MercadoLibre's strategy in Brazil, where it acquired a physical drugstore and launched a pilot program for over-the-counter medicines with rapid delivery. While Chile is not currently one of MercadoLibre's largest markets, a successful implementation there could pave the way for wider expansion throughout the region.
