Court Orders Meesho to Remove Fake Sunscreens
10 Aug
Summary
- Delhi High Court ordered Meesho to remove counterfeit sunscreens.
- Sun Pharma claims fake products are sold on Meesho.
- The case explores platform liability for counterfeit goods.

The Delhi High Court has mandated that the e-commerce platform Meesho remove all counterfeit sunscreen products falsely branded as Sun Pharmaceuticals' Belo Photostable and Photostable Gold. Sun Pharma presented evidence to the court, including numerous URLs where these fake products were being offered for sale, noting that none of their authentic items are available on Meesho.
In response to Sun Pharma's claims, the court issued an ex-parte interim order directing Meesho to immediately take down all listed URLs. Furthermore, the court has requested responses from both the manufacturers of the counterfeit products and Meesho itself regarding the allegations. Sun Pharma emphasized that the sale of such unlicensed and fake goods poses a significant risk to its brand reputation and the trust it has cultivated with consumers over years.
This legal action brings to the forefront the critical issue of platform liability in the e-commerce space. There is growing pressure to hold online marketplaces accountable beyond their role as mere intermediaries, making them responsible for policing and removing counterfeit merchandise from their platforms.
