Matrix Service (NASDAQ:MTRX) achieved a return to profitability in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, reporting adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.16, a notable improvement from a loss of $0.28 in the same period last year. Revenue for the quarter saw a healthy 13% year-over-year increase, reaching $244.5 million, largely propelled by a significant 43% surge in its Storage and Terminal Solutions segment. The company's gross margin also showed marked improvement, expanding to 8% from 3.8% year-over-year, attributed to enhanced project execution and the resolution of prior issues.
Further demonstrating improved operational efficiency, selling, general, and administrative (SG&A) expenses decreased by 11% year-over-year, and as a percentage of revenue, improved to 6.9% from 8.1%. Matrix Service maintains a robust financial position with $223 million in cash, no outstanding debt, and total liquidity of $283.9 million. This strong balance sheet provides a foundation for future growth and potential shareholder returns.
Looking ahead, the company holds a substantial backlog of $953 million and identifies a $7 billion opportunity pipeline. A key component of this pipeline is a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the America First refinery project. The FEED work for the tank farm is anticipated by the end of fiscal Q2 2027, with potential conversion to a lump-sum price and award in late fiscal Q3 or early Q4 2027.
However, challenges persist. Total project awards in Q4 fiscal 2026 were $169 million, resulting in a book-to-bill ratio of 0.7, indicating weaker new order intake. The Process and Industrial Facilities segment experienced a revenue decline and a drop in gross margin. Additionally, the company incurred $3.4 million in restructuring costs in Q4, and 70-80% of the current backlog is projected to be completed in fiscal 2027, necessitating strong new awards to sustain revenue in the latter half of that year. Uncertainty also exists due to the absence of financial guidance, attributed to a CFO transition.
