Icy Waters Sink Maryland Oyster Season
19 May
Summary
- Oyster harvesters in Maryland may get zero-interest disaster relief loans.
- Icy waterways, a Salmonella outbreak, and sewage spill impacted the season.
- Harvests dropped 44%, and dockside value fell 66% in February.

Maryland oyster harvesters are eligible for disaster relief loans following a severely disrupted 2025-26 season. Frozen waterways in January, a Salmonella outbreak in late 2025, and a sewage spill in the Potomac River created immense challenges. These events prevented harvesting and impacted consumer confidence.
By February, oyster harvests plummeted by 44%, with a 66% decrease in dockside value. The harvesting season was extended by two weeks, concluding on April 14, to provide additional opportunities for watermen.
In response to the economic distress, Maryland has established the Seafood Industry Financial Assistance Fund, allocating $2 million from the 2027 budget, with MARBIDCO adding another $1 million in temporary funding. Eligible harvesters can receive loans between $4,000 and $10,000 to cover expenses and losses. Congressman Andy Harris has also requested federal disaster assistance.
