Market Hall Trader Faces Ruin
8 Oct
Summary
- Trader lost housing due to market's low footfall.
- He faces bankruptcy with outstanding payments.
- Market Hall opened despite not being ready.
A former Derby Market Hall trader is confronting severe financial difficulties, including the potential for bankruptcy, after experiencing a "nightmare" period at the venue. Antonias Grimpokostas, who operated Tony's Greek Street Food, stated that dwindling footfall made his business unsustainable, forcing him to close his unit in November. As a result, he lost his rented accommodation and is currently juggling two jobs to manage his living expenses and mounting debts.
Grimpokostas, with 40 years of food industry experience and prior restaurant ownership, viewed the newly renovated Market Hall as a promising opportunity. However, he contended that the May 2025 reopening was premature. He reported that vendors were moved in just a week before opening, and his unit lacked essential services such as hot water, indicating the venue was not fully prepared for operation at the time of its launch.
