Manchester Libraries Reopen Sundays After 15 Years
21 Jun
Summary
- Sunday openings resume at Manchester libraries after 15 years.
- Eight venues will eventually be open on Sundays, starting soon.
- An extra £1.7 million budget boosts library hours and services.

Sunday library openings are returning to Manchester after a 15-year absence, beginning with some venues in September and four more by January 2027. This restoration of weekend hours is part of a broader library enhancement plan.
An additional £1.7 million in council funding will extend operating hours at nine libraries. Six libraries will start offering at least 30 staffed hours per week from June 22. Further increases in staffed hours are planned for libraries within specific leisure centres starting in September.
Councillor Shazia Butt highlighted the positive impact of increased investment, stating that residents will receive services they want and deserve. The Leader of Manchester City Council, Bev Craig, affirmed that resuming Sunday hours fulfills a commitment to community investment, restoring a service not available for nearly two decades.
