Mahindra Overtakes MG: India's No. 2 EV Maker

Mahindra has claimed the second spot in India's electric vehicle market for the first half of 2026, surpassing MG Motor India. From January to June 2026, Mahindra reported sales of 38,751 units, while MG sold 27,973 units. Tata Motors remains the market leader with 59,961 units sold. The Mahindra XEV 9S was instrumental in this growth, selling 18,167 units and becoming the second most popular EV model in India, trailing only the MG Windsor. This success highlights Mahindra's strategy to cater to larger families with its seven-seater electric SUV.

Mahindra's diverse EV portfolio contributed to its expanded market presence. The five-seater XEV 9e sold 11,149 units, complemented by the BE 6 (6,849 units), XUV 3XO EV (1,935 units), and XUV400 (651 units). MG's sales were primarily driven by the Windsor, which accounted for 19,080 units, with the Comet and ZS EV adding supplementary volumes. Industry experts attribute Mahindra's rise to product differentiation, particularly the XEV 9S's ability to attract new customers without impacting sales of the XEV 9e. Maruti Suzuki has also emerged as a competitor with its eVitara, selling 8,572 units.

Looking ahead, MG is set to launch the Hector Tomahawk EV on August 26, aiming to close the sales gap. Mahindra reinforced its position by launching the BE 6 SPORTEQ on August 15 with updated features. The company is also reportedly developing the BE 7 for a 2027 launch. Maruti Suzuki is also planning a three-row, seven-seater EV for 2027, potentially challenging Tata Motors directly.
