Maharashtra Mandates Paneer Truth: No More Cheese Imposters!
1 May
Summary
- Restaurants must disclose if paneer is real or a substitute.
- Non-dairy substitutes must be labeled as 'cheese analogue'.
- Action to be taken against violators under food safety laws.

As of Thursday, Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration has mandated that restaurants and eateries clearly disclose whether 'paneer' dishes contain genuine cottage cheese or a substitute. This directive, effective March 20, aims to prevent consumer deception regarding the use of less expensive non-dairy alternatives.
Food businesses, including hotels and fast-food outlets, must now explicitly label cheese analogues on menus, bills, and display boards. Manufacturers and suppliers are also required to accurately label these substitute products. Action will be taken against non-compliant establishments under existing food safety laws.
Paneer is derived solely from milk, while cheese analogues are made with oils and starches. Although substitutes are not deemed unsafe, consumers have a right to know the ingredients. The Hotel and Restaurant Association has pledged compliance and advised members to label substitutes as 'cheese analogue' consistently across all customer communications.
