Maharashtra's Banana Boom: New King of Indian Fruit
25 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Banana production in Maharashtra is projected to hit 25% of India's total output.
- Banana's gross value of output surpasses mango for the first time in 2023-24.
- New export markets in Iran, Iraq, and UK offer significant growth opportunities.

Maharashtra is solidifying its status as India's premier banana-producing region, with projections indicating it will account for nearly 25% of the nation's 14.2-million-tonne output by marketing year 2025. This surge in cultivation is driven by attractive prices and increasing commercial demand. Notably, bananas have now surpassed mangoes in economic value, generating ₹47,000 crore in gross output in 2023-24, a significant shift after over a decade of mango's dominance.
The state is witnessing a rapid expansion of banana acreage, particularly in areas like Solapur, Nanded, and Jamner, joining the established hub of Jalgaon. Exports, which have grown substantially to over 55,000 containers annually, are transforming the crop into a highly lucrative option for farmers. While recent price fluctuations have prompted calls for government support and market monitoring, the establishment of a dedicated Banana Board and a network of cold storage and processing units are underway to bolster the industry.
India's export potential is further enhanced by strong demand in Middle Eastern countries and new opportunities in Iran and Iraq, where India holds a significant price advantage. The recent India-UK Free Trade Agreement opens access to a premium market, allowing India to diversify its export base beyond developing economies and capitalize on demand for premium, longer-shelf-life bananas.
