Macy's Shuts 14 More Stores in 2026 Shake-Up
11 Jan
Summary
- Macy's will close 14 additional stores in 12 states by March 2026.
- These closures are part of a strategy to focus on 'underproductive' locations.
- Liquidation sales at affected malls will begin mid-January 2026.

Beloved department store Macy's is continuing its 'Bold New Chapter' strategy by closing an additional 14 locations across 12 U.S. states. These closures, slated for completion by March 2026, target 'underproductive' sites as part of a larger initiative to streamline operations and focus on key, modernized stores.
Liquidation sales for the newly affected malls are scheduled to commence in mid-January 2026 and are expected to run for approximately 10 weeks. Macy's has stated that affected employees are being provided with transfer opportunities and severance resources as the company shifts its focus to enhancing customer service and its luxury business.
This move follows a broader plan announced in 2024 to eventually close 150 stores by 2026. In 2025 alone, Macy's had already shuttered 66 locations. The company aims for a more 'Modern Macy's' by concentrating on fewer, more efficient, and desirable retail spaces.
