Massachusetts iLottery Launches Summer 2026
31 May
Summary
- Online lottery sales to fund early childhood education.
- Launch scheduled for summer 2026, aged 21+ players.
- Retailers express concern over potential sales decline.

The Massachusetts State Lottery is preparing to launch its online "iLottery" platform this summer, marking a significant expansion of the state's gaming landscape. This digital presence, approved by state lawmakers in 2024 and now finalized in the fiscal 2025 budget, is scheduled to begin operation in the summer of 2026. Initially, players must be 21 years old to participate online, a higher age requirement than the 18 minimum for in-store purchases.
Proceeds generated from iLottery sales will be dedicated to funding early childhood education and care programs. Regulatory amendments approved recently authorize the inclusion of existing draw games like Megabucks and Mass Cash, alongside new exclusively online offerings such as electronic instant-win games and daily numbers games (Mass 3 and Mass 4).
Lottery officials project substantial revenue growth, estimating $70 million in net profit in the first year, with figures expected to climb significantly over the next decade. However, some traditional retailers have voiced concerns, fearing that the convenience of online purchasing could negatively impact sales at brick-and-mortar stores. Despite these concerns, Lottery officials cite examples from other states where iLottery implementation has coincided with sustained or increased retail sales.
This iLottery initiative arrives as the Massachusetts Lottery experiences a plateau in activity, with sales showing a year-over-year decline. Officials hope the online platform will serve as a catalyst to reinvigorate overall sales and profitability for the Lottery.
