6 Mar
Summary
- A £136m town centre regeneration scheme in Luton is now progressing.
- The project includes homes, a performance venue, and commercial spaces.
- The development is part of a wider growth corridor expected to boost the economy.

Work is set to ramp up on Luton's £136 million town centre regeneration scheme, known as 'The Stage'. This major development, located on the former Bute Street car park, was previously delayed due to an assessment by the building safety regulator. The issue has now been resolved, and Luton Borough Council is committed to advancing the project.
The Stage development will deliver 292 apartments, including 84 affordable rental units, alongside a new performance area with a 600-person capacity. A public square, commercial space, and a food and drink area are also planned. This initiative is supported by £20 million from the Local Regeneration Fund and is seen as a landmark development for residents.
James Taylor, portfolio holder for regeneration, highlighted that 25% of Luton's town centre is currently undergoing redevelopment. He emphasized the transformative potential of the scheme and its role in capitalizing on opportunities within the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor. The council aims to position Luton as a hub for regional growth, leveraging the town's airport expansion and proximity to major attractions.
Additional investment of £12 million is earmarked for transforming parks and public spaces in Luton. Upgrades to leisure facilities and homes are also underway. This comprehensive approach aims to create a noticeable positive impact on the town and its residents.
