Lufthansa Pilots Strike: Germany Faces Flight Chaos
12 Mar
Summary
- Hundreds of Lufthansa flights were cancelled due to a two-day pilot strike.
- The strike impacts operations at Frankfurt and Munich airports significantly.
- Disputes over pay increases and company pensions fuel the industrial action.

Hundreds of Lufthansa flights were grounded across Germany on Thursday as pilots initiated a two-day strike. This industrial action has caused significant disruptions at the airline's main hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, with hundreds of connections cancelled.
The strike, called by the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit, involves over 5,000 pilots from Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, and Lufthansa Cityline. The core of the dispute lies in disagreements over pay increases at the regional subsidiary CityLine and enhanced company pensions for pilots at Lufthansa Cargo and the main Lufthansa airline.
Lufthansa has indicated that roughly half of its scheduled flights will operate during the strike period, with long-haul routes seeing up to 60% of flights take off. The union, however, anticipates around 300 flight cancellations daily, aiming for a notable impact. This action follows a previous wave of industrial action in February which saw approximately 800 flights cancelled.
