Lincoln Castle is slated for extensive repairs over the next four years, with Lincolnshire County Council approving a £12.4 million maintenance plan. The council aims to preserve the historic landmark and ensure its continued safety for the public.
The first phase of this vital work is scheduled to commence this summer. It will focus on immediate repairs to the castle's walls, towers, and other historic structures, making them safe and accessible. This includes crucial masonry work on the Observatory Tower, which is currently closed due to safety concerns, as well as emergency repairs on Lucy Tower and the East Wall.
Subsequent phases will address maintenance needs for other buildings within the castle grounds, such as the Bath House, Cobb Hall, and Gatehouse Lodge. The council has stated that these repairs have been meticulously planned to avoid disruption to the castle's popular events program. Lincoln Castle, a significant historical site housing an original copy of the Magna Carta, is also a major economic driver for the region, having contributed £15 million to the local economy in 2024.
